Current Artists, New book about Muriel Cooper and Kepes at MIT.
2017-18 Artist/Scholar Residents
Guest curators Dylan Gauthier and Kendra Sullivan have selected a group of interdisciplinary artists and writers working at the intersections of art, science, ecology, research, and land and water based practices to participate in the program.
Our guest curators and a group of artists have just completed their second stay in Wellfleet, continuing their research and exploration of the Outer Cape, it’s environs and the work of local scientists. Some will be back in January and we are planning an exhibition of their work for May 2018.

New Muriel Cooper Book
We are happy to announce the publication of Muriel Cooper, By David Reinfurt and Robert Wiesenberger (MIT Press). David worked on the book as one of our 2012 artist/scholar residents. Muriel Cooper was the pioneering designer who created the iconic MIT Press logo, the modernist monument, the encyclopedic volume The Bauhaus (1969), and the dazzling and controversial first edition of Learning from Las Vegas (1972). She used an offset press as an artistic tool, worked with a large-format Polaroid camera, and developed early software interfaces.

György Kepes Photographs

This show features rare and never-before-seen photographs that span more than four decades of his creative practice, many of the photographs have been printed from original negatives that are not known to have been printed by the photographer, while others are vintage prints made by Kepes himself that have not been previously exhibited or published.

2017-18 Art+Design+Science Residency and Exhibition in Cape Cod National Seashore

The Cape Cod Modern House Trust (CCMHT) and the National Park Service (NPS) are collaborating on a residency and exhibition that invites contemporary artists to work alongside NPS scientists as well as researchers from the Center for Coastal Studies (CCS) in the field.
Guest curators Dylan Gauthier and Kendra Sullivan have selected a group of interdisciplinary artists and writers working at the intersections of art, science, ecology, research, and land and water based practices to participate in the program. From mapping of the sea floor and tracking the health of marsh-lands and historic ponds and rivers, there are over 70 science research projects going on at any given time in the Cape Cod National Seashore. Alongside the Seashore scientists, researchers at the Center for Coastal Studies are tracking whale health and migration and mapping the seafloor around the cape to understand the geologic changes taking place in the region.
The visiting artists will stay in the three restored modern houses which are owned by the NPS and were restored by CCMHT, which also served as laboratories and research bases for their original inhabitants. Artist and MIT professor, György Kepes, in particular, sought to bridge the gaps between art, design and hard science. His ground-breaking books and lectures show how crossing boundaries can catalyze fresh insight and create new forms of knowledge at intersections of traditional academic and artistic fields.
CCMHT was founded in 2007. Its mission is to collect, archive and share documentation of the outer Cape’s exceptional modern architecture, restore a group of important, endangered modern houses, and to relaunch them as platforms for new creative work.
Through an interdisciplinary approach, CCMHT works to bring to light the forgotten history of the mid-century creative community in Wellfleet, which included Marcel Breuer, Serge Chermayeff, Olav Hammarstrom, Paul Weidinger, Walter Gropius, Xanti Schawinsky, Konrad Wachsmann, Costantino Nivola, the Saarinen and Kepes families, and Florence and Hans Knoll, among others. In their teaching, writing and travels this group sought empirical data to inform new approaches to visual art, curation, and the design of furniture, housing and urban spaces. They worked and shared ideas in the Cape’s woods and isolated beaches. Reflecting this history, this year is the first time CCMHT has proposed collaborations between artists and scientists doing research in the Cape Cod National Seashore (NPS).
Residents will spend two weeks in the Trust’s houses in May and October 2017, and January 2018 with a planned exhibition of new works produced while in residence to follow in the spring of 2018. An exhibition catalogue will be produced to accompany the exhibition.

The project was initiated by Peter McMahon, Founding Director of CCMHT, and Mark Adams, artist and NPS staff cartographer who is facilitating engagement with the NPS and the Center for Coastal Studies.
